Scott Joplin () was the "King of Ragtime", composing and selling dozens of popular numbers, starting with "Maple Leaf Rag". Joplin struggled in vain to gain acceptance for his classical works, which included three operas. One of them "Treemonisha", was first produced long after his death. It is on a CD, Polygram ().

Morath remained busy at the beginning of the 21st century, traveling all over the world with his one-man show, Max Morath the Ragtime Man. Morath's discs have continuously remained in print throughout the years and are available on several labels, including Vanguard, Epic, and RCA Red Seal.

I enjoy Joplin's music, and Max Morath is for me the undisputed number one interpreter. Joining him is the Original Rag Quartet with splendid arrangements of several Joplin compositions. Of particular interest is 'A Real Slow Drag' from Jolin's opera Treemonisha, one of the harmonically most pleasing arrangements I have ever heard.
