Born and raised in New York, cellist-composer-arranger Akua Dixon boasts a silky jazz style solidly anchored in African and Latin roots. With an enviable musical background, Ms. Dixon recorded/performed with a panoply of superior artists, from the jazz masters Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie to pop icon David Byrne to soul diva Aretha Franklin.

Akua's Dance also transposes two covers into Dixon's unique voice. Sade 's quiet storm dancefloor hit "The Sweetest Taboo" proves most inspired, with Lewis tap-dancing the rhythm hand-in-hand with Dixon's smooth, flowing melody on baritone violin, delivering a rhythmic vibrancy and dynamism that other, more stately tunes often seem to want.

Akua's Dance is the title track and was taken from the opera; the slow, sweeping melody is layered over a bolero-like rhythm with snare drum. Davis's guitarwork evokes some of the Latin tinge to the Louisiana dance. A worthy departure of the album is Dixon singing Abbie Lincoln's Throw It Away, but the highlight is Afrika! Afrika!/5(4).
